New York University announced plans to establish a degree-granting campus in Shanghai. NYU's president was expected to sign an agreement on March 28 with Chinese officials to seal the deal. This move signals a continuing trend for American universities. NYU already has a degree-granting campus in Abu Dhabi, established in September 2010, and has smaller programs in other countries. The goal of these programs is to lure faculty talent and tuition from foreign students, as well as giving U.S.-based students an option to study in a foreign land while still being affiliated with their home university. NYU expects to offer classes in Shanghai beginning in September 2013, and envisions an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students, with 40-50% being from China. Classes will be taught in English.
